Detailed LG CX OLED TV Review

Unboxing & First Impression

When I got my brand-new LG CX OLED TV, I was overjoyed because I am a massive fan of television and technology. After opening the package containing my brand-new set, I couldn’t wait to start my first impression review.

In the box of the LG CX, there are the usual things:

  • User manual
  • Composite breakout adapter
  • Batteries
  • Remote
  • Not shown: Power cable and panel covers for cable management

It is very stable when I attach the stand to the TV and put it on a cabinet. It’s due to the heavy stand at the back of the TV.

The TV has four HDMI 2.1 ports, which puts it ahead of many other OLED models from this year. With HDMI 2.1, the TV could get high-end signals, such as 4K resolution at 100 fps. So your pictures will be clear and smooth.

Design & Build

The LG CX OLED TV is a high-end-looking TV with ultra-thin bezels on all four sides. The back of the bottom half of the chassis bulges out to make space for the internals, but the top panel is very thin, and everything rests on a sloping metal stand in the middle.

The stand is stable, and the TV doesn’t move around too much. It’s almost as wide as a TV, so it needs to go on a big table.

In my testing, the LG CX has exceptional build quality. The front of the stand and the top half of the back is made of metal, although the top half of the television is relatively flexible.

Design Facts

  • Style (Front & Back): No Curved
  • Bezels: Thin bezels
  • Max Thickness: 1.93″ (4.9 cm)
  • Wall Mount: VESA 300×200
  • Build Quality: Exceptional Build Quality
  • Stand: Solid Stand
  • Expert Review: Excellent Tv

What Other Experts Say!

“The LG CX is no exception in that regard, but I will say that the standard picture quality out of the box is just way off in terms of color and white balance. I recommend using either of the expert picture profile modes depending on the brightness of your room.”

Movies

If you want to watch movies in a dark room, the LG CX OLED is a great choice. It’s great for watching movies in the dark because its OLED screen can produce perfect blacks.

It effectively upscales 1080p content, can remove judder from 24p sources such as Blu-ray players, and has an almost immediate response time. However, this causes certain content to appear to judder.

The LG CX’s panel reduces reflections and light leakage, so you don’t need blackout curtains to watch your movies. In my experience, it also has a wide viewing angle, which is excellent if your furniture needs to be in front of the TV.

Display Type: OLED
Resolution: 4K
Contrast & local dimming: Near contrast ratio (Inf: 1), no local Dimming
Upscaling: 4k Upscaling

HDR Picture

The LG CX OLED TV HDR picture quality gives you a refined experience with HDR10+, Dolby Vision IQ, and Atmos. It covers almost all the DCI P3 color space and 3/4 of the Rec. 2020 color space.

Peak brightness ranges from 600 to 800 cd/m2, depending on the content. The contrast and local dimming are perfect. In contrast to LCD TVs, the OLED panel can turn off individual pixels. This means no blooming, and the contrast ratio is always excellent.

In my experience, the LG CX has a wide color gamut and color volume for HDR content. It covers almost all the most common color space, DCI P3, used in most content.

Unfortunately, its HDR peak brightness is only average, and some highlights may not appear as intended.

HDR Type: Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10, and HLG
HDR Peak Brightness: Around 700 nits in HDR
Native HDR Gradient: 100% Black to 50% Gray
Color Gamut: Wide color gamut (71.67%)
Color Volume: normal color volume (61.0%)

9/10

Sports & Shows

The LG CX OLED is great for watching sports and TV shows in rooms with a lot of light. It does a great job with reflections, but its peak brightness is okay.

In my experience, it has a near-instantaneous (o.3 ms) response time and reflection handling with a wide viewing angle, so the whole family can watch their favorite show together. Also, it does an excellent job of upscaling 720p content.

Unfortunately, much like every other OLED TV, it runs the danger of burn-in, which can become an issue when exposed to static images such as logos regularly.

It responds almost instantly, which makes fast-moving content look smooth, and there’s no dirty screen effect in the center.

Brightness: 700 nits of peak brightness
Response Time: near-instantaneous (o.3ms)
Reflections: Fantastic reflection handling (1.5%)
Viewing Angles: Wide viewing Angle
Gray uniformity: Impressive gray uniformity ( 0.401%)

Sound Quality

The sound quality of the LG CX OLED TV is among the best that I’ve experienced coming from an OLED TV. LG CX has 2 speakers and 2 subwoofers. Therefore, the TV has a broader range between highs and lows that sound deeper.

The rich sound is especially noticeable when watching action scenes or listening to music. For an authentic cinema experience, I still recommend the soundbar. This makes the sound more profound and spacious since the CX supports Dolby Atmos.

In my experience, this LG CX has a good frequency response (63.50 Hz) and low distortion. Even though the low-frequency range is acceptable, it still can’t make much deep bass. Its 40-watt,  2.2-channel speaker system can spread sound over a larger area and deliver better-placed details than its predecessor. This TV has a low level of distortion.

Sound Facts

  • Power: Good 40 watts (20-watt woofer)
  • Frequency response: Good (63.50 Hz)
  • Sound modes (ALLM): Yes
  • Dolby Vision: Yes
  • Distortion: Low distortion
  • Expert Review: Powerful Tv

What Other Experts Say!

“The LG CX OLED TV has sound quality is actually pretty good because there is e-arc or enhanced audio return channel support.”

Gaming Performance

The LG CX OLED is excellent for video games. In gaming mode, the input lag is very low, the response time is almost instantaneous, and it supports G-SYNC, FreeSync, and HDMI Forum VRR to reduce screen tearing.

Meanwhile, when compatible consoles are connected, ALLM automatically activates the TV’s low-latency game mode. In my testing, it’s an excellent choice for darkroom gaming, as it can produce perfect blacks.

This TV can play high-dynamic range (HDR) video games on modern gaming consoles or personal computers. Compatible with: Xbox One X|S, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 Pro, PS5, GTX 10 series, and later, and AMD RX series graphics cards.

Gaming Facts

  • Input Lag: Low
  • HDMI Ports: (all four 40Gbps HDMI 2.1)
  • Variable Refresh Rate: 120HZ
  • Response time: 0.3 ms
  • Compatibility with Consoles: yes (Xbox One X|S, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 Pro)
  • Expert Review: Best Tv

What Other Experts Say!

“The LG CX OLED TV has a variable refresh rate up to 120 hertz on an oled panel with unbelievable responsiveness when it comes to gaming to be quite honest this thing absolutely blew away myexpectations of gaming on a tv.”

 Smart Feature & Inputs

The LG CX runs the latest LG WebOS smart TV platform. The CX supports the HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG HDR formats. Unfortunately, there’s no support for the HDR10+ format.

There is a powerful set of built-in applications. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Disney Plus all offer Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos-compatible content. There’s also Google Play Movies & TV, though HDR didn’t work on that app during testing.

The WebOS interface is streamlined and easy to use. The LG CX supports eARC when connected to a compatible receiver to send high-quality audio, such as Dolby Atmos, to an external receiver via TrueHD.

In my experience, the LG CX OLED TV has four HDMI ports that use the latest 2.1 standards, meaning they can support 4K content at 120 fps from the latest game consoles.

Key Smart Features:

  • Operating system: Web OS
  • App selection: Great
  • User interface: Easy to use Interface
  • Voice Control: Yes
  • HDMI: (all four 40Gbps HDMI 2.1) eARC
  • USB: USB 2.0 ports
  • Bluetooth: yes
  • WIFI: yes
  • Ethernet: yes

What Other Experts Say!

“The WebOS interface is smooth and easy to use. Thanks to the HDMI 2.1 inputs, it supports 4k gaming up to 120Hz from either the Xbox Series X or PS5. “
