Mounting a TV over a brick fireplace comes with its own set of challenges which you would not expect if you were mounting it on a regular wall.

That being said, if you make the right decisions and plan ahead, you can definitely overcome those challenges to securely mount your TV on it.

Quick summary

In this post, we will discuss how you can easily and safely mount your TV over your brick fireplace.

Without further ado, let’s get started.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before we mount your flat-screen television onto a fireplace, it’s a good idea to get all of your tools and materials gathered first.

This is because if you don’t have all the tools gathered, you will constantly stop the installation process to go look for them. If they need to be bought, that will delay the installation process even more.

Hence, please get all of the tools and materials required gathered first before you get started with the installation of your TV on a brick fireplace.

The tools and materials you will need are:

  • A hammer drill: If you have an electric drill, this makes the process much easier. There’s also a much lower chance you will damage the brick fireplace if you use a drill.
  • Drill bits: You can use this drill bit to appropriately install the screws into the fireplace.
  • White cord concealer or adhesive hooks
  • A TV wall mount
  • A pencil or a marker: Always use something that will leave a visible mark on the brick structure.

It’s important that when you buy a wall mount, it has to be large enough to support the size and weight of your TV. Make sure you buy one that’s compatible.

Furthermore, since you are mounting a TV on a brick fireplace, make sure that you get a mount that is designed for it.

Not all wall mounts can be mounted on brick fireplaces.

If you get a regular wall mount, it may not fit into the brick wall. Even if it does, there’s a chance that its construction may get damaged as the heat rises from the fireplace.

Hence, always buy a TV wall mount that is specifically meant to be installed onto a brick fireplace.

Now that you have all of the tools and materials gathered, it’s time for installation.

Step 1: Have a friend or family member hold up the wall mount onto the location where you intend to install it.

Make sure that you use a level at this stage to ensure your friend is not holding the wall mount in a crooked fashion.

Take your marker and pencil and mark all of the mounting holes that are needed to install the mount.

Step 2: Take your hammer drill with the drill bit and use it to drill the holes into the marks that you made in step 1.

It’s important that you be gentle initially. Pull the trigger slowly and gently press the drill into the brick. As it starts to dig in, pull the trigger firmly and push the drill in with your palm.

Step 3: Take the Snug Hex Head screws that you bought and use your drill to mount the TV bracket onto the brick fireplace.

Of course, it’s a good idea to enlist the help of a friend at this stage as well. They can hold the mount up as you install the mount using the drill holes.

Make sure not to over-tighten the hex head screws. If you tighten them too much, they might break or damage your brick fireplace.

Step 4: Connect the TV to the mounting bracket that you have installed onto the wall.

This process may vary depending on the model and manufacturer of both TV as well as the wall mount.

Just make sure that you follow the instructions provided by both and you should be golden. You’ll most likely get assorted screws and bolts with the TV mount as well that you can use to properly install the TV onto it.

Important note: Depending on the model and manufacturer of your TV mount, you may have to install the TV onto it first before you mount it on the wall.

Just make sure that you read the instructions carefully to know whether you need to install the TV before or after you install the mounting bracket onto the wall.

Step 5: Once the TV is installed, the last step is cable management.

Use the white cord concealer or adhesive hooks to tidy up and hide the power cable and other wires you may need to operate your television.

We used white since our fireplace is painted white. However, you should use whatever color wire or concealer that works best with the color of your fireplace.

That’s pretty much it! You’ve now successfully installed a TV onto your brick fireplace. Mounting TVs may seem highly complicated but as you can see, it’s only a couple of hours of work.

Hey, it can even be a fun bonding experience if you have friends over. Nothing strengthens friendships like installing a TV that will be used for fun times down the line together.

Wrapping Things Up…

That’s how you mount a flat-screen TV onto a brick fireplace.

There’s not a whole lot to it, really. Most of the process is just regular installation except for a few pitfalls you have to watch out for.

We hope this guide helped you.

Always get a TV mount that is specifically intended for hanging above fireplaces and always be careful when drilling holes so as not to damage the bricks inside too much.
